The
two-day conference, held from 30th to 31st July 2026 at USTED-Kumasi,
was organized by the School of Graduate Studies in collaboration with the
Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG). It brought together
postgraduate researchers, academics, and students from different disciplines to
present research findings and exchange ideas on emerging development
challenges.
Held
under the theme, “Interdisciplinary Research for a Resilient Future: The
Contribution of Postgraduate Studies,” the conference provided a platform
for researchers to demonstrate how postgraduate research can contribute to
addressing pressing challenges through innovation, collaboration, and
evidence-based solutions.
A
Milestone in Crop Science Research
For
Appiah, the Best Poster Presentation Award represents more than an
academic accolade. It is a recognition of the sustained effort invested in
research focused on improving agricultural productivity and sustainability.
His
research interests centre on Crop Science, crop physiology, precision
agriculture, and sustainable maize production, areas increasingly important
to efforts to strengthen food production while responding to environmental and
resource constraints.
Reflecting
on the recognition, Appiah expressed gratitude to the conference organizers and
the judging panel, describing the award as an important milestone in his
academic journey.
He
also acknowledged the contribution of his academic mentors and colleagues,
particularly lecturers of the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences
Education, Faculty of Agriculture Education, whose guidance and
encouragement have supported his research development.
Among
those he thanked were Prof. Harrison Kwame Dapaah, Prof. (Mrs.) Margaret Esi
Essilfie, Prof. Stephen Larbi-Koranteng, Dr. Samuel Ebo Owusu, Dr. Benjamin Aboagye Danso, Dr. Benard Effah, Dr. Bennet Yaw Osei, and Isaac Ntekor, alongside colleagues, fellow postgraduate students,
friends, and family.
Research
and the Future of Agriculture
The
recognition comes at a time when agricultural research is increasingly being
called upon to provide practical responses to food security, climate, and
sustainability challenges.
For
researchers working in Crop Science, the integration of precision
agriculture, crop physiology, improved agronomic practices, and sustainable
production systems offers opportunities to increase productivity while
using land, water, nutrients, and other resources more efficiently.
Appiah
said the award has further strengthened his commitment to research and to
contributing to solutions that can support sustainable agriculture, food
security, and scientific innovation.
Rather
than viewing the recognition as an endpoint, he sees it as motivation to
continue learning, collaborating, and translating research findings into
practical agricultural solutions.
Looking
Ahead
The
Best Poster Presenter award adds to Appiah's growing academic and research
experience and underscores the role of postgraduate conferences in providing
platforms for emerging researchers to communicate their work.
As
postgraduate research continues to expand across Ghanaian universities, such
platforms provide opportunities for researchers to engage with peers, receive
critical feedback, and build collaborations that can extend beyond the
university environment.
For
Appiah, the next chapter is clear: to deepen his research, strengthen
collaborations, and contribute evidence that can help shape more productive and
sustainable agricultural systems.
